Permeable Surfacing
Permitted development rights for domestic front gardens has recently been changed so that only permeable surfaces can be used without planning permission.
Planning permission is now required to lay traditional impermeable driveways that allow uncontrolled runoff of rainwater from front gardens onto roads, because this can contribute to flooding and pollution of watercourses.
Permeable paving allows water to drain through the surface, either through the voids between the paving (infiltration) or through the porus surface of the block itself.

Impermeable surfacing does not allow water to drain through the surface and so require planning permission for use in front gardens.
